DeQuincy Meiffren-Lezine, PhD, CEO, Prevention Communities

DeQuincy Meiffren-Lezine is a suicide attempt survivor who has been active in suicide prevention for 25 years. With an interdisciplinary background in psychology and public health, he has assisted with the development of college, county, state, and national suicide prevention plans. He received his Ph.D. in Psychology from UCLA with a primary focus on clinical psychology and a secondary focus on quantitative methods. 

Upon graduation from UCLA, Dr. Meiffren-Lezine completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Rochester, with courses of study and practical application in epidemiology, public health, community psychology, and clinical interventions. During his fellowship, Dr. Meiffren-Lezine authored the book Eight Stories Up: An Adolescent Chooses Hope Over Suicide (Oxford University Press, 2008) to provide adolescents with a blend of autobiographical and professional guidance related to suicide prevention. 

While assisting community coalitions with developing behavioral health prevention plans in Maricopa County, AZ, he also served on the Board of Directors for Empact, the primary crisis center in Arizona. At the national level, Dr. Meiffren-Lezine was the inaugural Chair of the Attempt Survivor and Lived Experience Division of AAS, and past Co-Chair of the Consumer Survivor Committee for the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline. Among other related organizations, he was a member of Task Forces for the National Action Alliance (Action Alliance) for Suicide Prevention (Suicide Attempt Survivors Task Force and the Impact Group). In his Action Alliance role, he was the primary writer of The Way Forward: Pathways to Hope, Recovery, and Wellness with Insights from Lived Experience released in July 2014. 

As part of the response to a cluster of high school suicides in Fresno, Dr. Meiffren-Lezine was one of the principal authors of the suicide prevention plan for Fresno County which integrated theoretical concepts with public health data. Dr. Meiffren-Lezine was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award for contributions to suicide prevention at the SAMHSA 2015 Voice Awards. He is the Director of the Lived Experience Academy, and author of three books available through Amazon.com: Eight Stories Up, 13 Answers for the 13 Reasons Why, and It is My Blood to Scribe.
